The Use of Mixed Reality for Manufacturing

Published:

Monitoring, diagnostics, and prognostics (MDP) play important role in manufacturing industry. Predictive algorithms indicate potential problems of a machine-tool, process, or raw materials involved in the operation of the system of interest. On the other hand, MDP algorithms have to be supported by visualization interfaces to facilitate the interaction between the user or other decision maker and the monitored system. These interfaces have been evolving from simple light or sound indicators to digital representations -Digital Twin- of the system in mixed reality systems (e.g. Holo Computers). One example of such an interfacescomes from space missions: the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) must follow thousands of standard operating procedures with the tools in the station. Performing these procedures in time sensitive manner.

teaching

Computer Aided Design

Undergraduate course, Koc University 2008, 2009, 2010

This course aims at preparing the engineering student to future courses where Computer Aided Design (CAD) is used as a tool to accomplish a given task. For this reason, students are required to learn CAD software such that they can create and design mechanical parts, products and assemblies. The CAD/CAM software utilized in this course is SIEMENS NX which has been highly used in various industries all around the world in the design and manufacturing of parts and products.

Dynamics

Undergraduate course, Koc University 2008, 2009, 2010

Dynamics is a fundemental course in Mechanical Engineering education and it is targeting all mechanical engineering students at Koc Univeristy. It focuses on teaching the concepts and methods on planar and three-dimensional kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies. It covers work, energy, impulse and momentum concepts

Mechatronics and Control

Graduate course, Koc University 2009, 2010, 2011

The main objective of Mechatronics and Contro class is to expose the engineering graduate students to the multi-disciplinary and synergistic use of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering in order to design improved products and processes. The class is designed to equip the students with theoretical and practical knowledge to take on electro-mechanical design challenges that are available in most of the engineering applications in today’s world. The class uses the fundamentals of automation, precision engineering, control theory, sensors, and actuator technologies in order to solve the encountered problems in various engineering disciplines. The course covers computer integration of electro-mechanical systems, sensors and transducers, actuators, signal conditioning, interfacing, mixed dynamic systems modeling and simulations, data acquisition and instrumentation as well as real time process monitoring and control. In this class, both hardware and software issues are emphasized in detail. The lectures are also supported by students’ hands-on experiments and projects.
